Ryan Daniel Beck Brings bodyART to America and Shares Fit Biz Tips
I spent most of my career as an entertainment and fitness professional. To stay in shape I would take dance classes, yoga and pilates. It worked well for me. But as I now get precariously closer to 40, I find the fitness methods that used to keep my body in shape are now starting to break it down and injure it. Thankfully, bodyART has come to the rescue. The bodyART method is a physical therapy based (PTBT) approach to movement, to prevent injury, reduce pain and promote sustainability. It is inspired by Western PT and Eastern Philosophy TCM, and is designed to help you perform at your highest physical level while staying safe and injury-free. Classes are non-competitive, welcoming, positive experiences. The bodyART method guarantees that you will be able to continue to do all the activities you love to do, for as long as you want to do them, pain and injury free. It is ironic that I need a fitness class to help me take fitness class, but I suppose that is what happens if you want to stay in peak performance shape as you age.
Ryan Daniel Beck is the owner of bodyART Studios. He was introduced to bodyART by its creator, Robert Steinbacher, and then brought the concept to numerous NYC studios. Seeing the market potential for bodyART, Ryan was granted exclusive rights to open, manage and operate all bodyART-branded studio locations in America.
Prior to bodyART, Beck had an extensive performing career dancing for Beyoncé, Black Eyed Peas, MOMIX, MTV and more, before producing and directing for ABC, Equity Fights AIDS, Good Morning America, Celebrity Cruises and Hard Rock Cafe, among others. With over 200 hours of ASFYT Anatomy and Kinesiology and 15+ years of teaching experience, Ryan is a sought-after international movement instructor.
I asked Ryan Daniel Beck more about bodyART, and his advice on building a fitness business:
You have built a fantastic fitness business and brand. How did you get started with bodyART?
As a professional dancer, I started to have knee and back issues from years of being on tour, partnering and lots of acrobatic tumbling. In working with my physical therapist, it became clear that the science of PT was super beneficial, but most often accessed AFTER people are injured, not before. The bodyART system is a very cool and exciting way to bring injury prevention to people, it’s an immersive experience that is not boring and highly addictive.
Any tips for trainers on how to build or expand their own fitness businesses?
Way too many fitpros try to “invent” new gimmicks or cheesy programs in an attempt to “stand-out” in a super competitive and saturated market. This is totally the wrong strategy because everything from a push-up to a burpee already exists. Instead, focus on the “how” not the “what.” Clients want knowledgeable and friendly guidance, with a high level of personalized hospitality.
What makes bodyART different from typical training modalities?
We are the world’s first and only PTBT (physical therapy based training) concept. Most concepts in the fitness industry focus on either weight loss, hypertrophy (big muscles), or some type of burn/shred/cut/torch/rip messaging that very often accelerates the aging process. As a PTBT business, our value proposition to clients is threefold: injury prevention, pain reduction and sustainable longevity for your knees, hips, spine, ankles, shoulders, elbows and wrists. We guarantee to help you keep doing the activities you love to do for a long time, pain and injury free.”
The bodyART method is gentle on the body, but is it rigorous enough for people who want to lose weight, if that is what they are looking for?
In bodyART, we believe that science and education are the most powerful tools for lasting change. So from that perspective, we inform all our bodyART guests that weight loss is the combined result of two things: what/how much you eat and your level of activity when you are NOT working out (NEAT non-exercise activity thermogenesis). People who are injured OR have chronic pain/discomfort in their knees/ankles/hips have much lower levels of daily activity and experience weight gain. People who train with bodyART experience pain-free joints, prevent injury and gradually find themselves walking, moving, and engaging more with daily activities. This is when they begin to observe significant aesthetic changes in their body composition (AKA weight loss).
How can someone become a bodyART certified trainer?
All of our movement specialists are hand-picked by our team. We look for individuals who have a very solid education in anatomy, biomechanics, kinesiology, physiology, traditional Chinese medicine, and/or physical therapy. We also look for people who are totally passionate about injury prevention, longevity, sustainability and reject the “punishmentality” narrative promoted on social media and online.
